Just as we all predicted prior to the 2017 NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champions after quarterback Nick Foles put together an MVP performance to cap an unforgettable playoff run.

Wait, you guys didn’t see that coming?

OK, it’s possible I didn’t either. Nor did the Eagles, who signed Foles to a two-year, $11 million contract in March, hoping only that he’d serve as an insurance policy for franchise quarterback Carson Wentz.

After a disappointing 2015 season in St. Louis and a year as a backup in Kansas City, the 29-year-old, who considered retiring in 2016, took over when Wentz suffered a torn ACL in December. And because Wentz was viewed as a top MVP candidate when that happened, it felt as though Philadelphia’s season was over.

Guess not.

The 2012 third-round pick looked rusty in relief of Wentz late in the regular season, but he was on fire throughout the playoffs, posting a combined 115.9 passer rating in upset victories over the Atlanta Falcons, Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots.

The Super Bowl MVP—the man with the highest playoff passer rating in NFL history among quarterbacks with at least 125 attempts—is slated to earn only $7 million as a backup quarterback in 2018.

That can’t happen, can it? You’d have to think that one of the league’s many quarterback-thirsty teams would be willing to make Philadelphia an offer it can’t refuse, especially considering that the Eagles would probably face losing Foles for no return when his contract expires in March 2019.

The way I see, there are four potential avenues for Foles in the year ahead. Let’s break them down.

1. Foles is traded this offseason

These days, there’s so much pressure on teams to find a quarterback who can win them a Super Bowl that it has to be tempting to go after a quarterback who just won one.

What if Foles is the real deal? It’s not as though he came out of nowhere—he made a Pro Bowl after posting the third-highest qualified single-season passer rating in NFL history in 2013—and now the sixth-year signal-caller can be had for just $7 million in 2018.

That’s if you’re able to dangle enough in front of Eagles general manager Howie Roseman.

If you’re an Arizona Cardinals team looking to avoid a rebuild following Carson Palmer’s retirement, are you willing to part with the No. 15 overall pick? What about Tyrann Mathieu, Patrick Peterson, Chandler Jones or Budda Baker?

If you’re a Cleveland Browns team trying to finally stop the bleeding under center, are you willing to trade away any of the four picks you have in the top 35? What about Joe Thomas, Jabrill Peppers or Jamie Collins?

If you’re a New York Jets team tired of swinging and missing with quarterbacks in the draft, would you be better off sacrificing the No. 6 overall pick? Maybe your second-rounder? What about Darron Lee or Marcus Maye?

If you’re a Denver Broncos team looking to upgrade on Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian, what would your thoughts be on dealing away your early first- or second-round pick? What about Derek Wolfe, Brandon Marshall, Aqib Talib or Bradley Roby?

And if you’re the Eagles, can you justify turning down an offer involving any of those assets, knowing that Foles isn’t supposed to play in 2018 and will likely be gone in 2019?

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that the front office “would consider” trading Foles “for the right price,” noting, too, that the Eagles haven’t shied away from making trades in recent years.

There’s a good chance offers are made. The question is how much teams are willing to part with in exchange for a quarterback who hasn’t done much outside of two magnificent stretches.

Ultimately, don’t be surprised if Foles winds up starting in 2018 for the Cardinals, Browns, Jets, Broncos or Bills.

2. Foles is retained until Wentz is ready, then he’s put on the trade market

The Eagles haven’t issued a timetable for Wentz’s recovery, but with an ACL tear (not to mention an LCL tear as well), you’re typically looking at a minimum of nine months. There have been exceptions, but it’s far too early for anyone to know if Wentz will be one of those.

“I feel very confident, I truly believe, my goal is to be ready for Week 1,” Wentz told the media last week, according to Paul Domowitch of the Philadelphia Daily News. “I’m going to push and do everything I can to be ready, and I’m confident in that.”

Still, Wentz suffered the injury on December 10, which casts a fair amount of doubt on whether he’ll be able to suit up for Philly’s season opener on September 6.

The Eagles will have a target on their back as they try to fight off a Super Bowl hangover next season. Would they risk playing without both Wentz and Foles to start the season? Before pulling the trigger on a potential Foles deal, they might be better off waiting for Wentz to recover, prove that his knee is fully healed and produce in some regular-season games.

3. Foles spends the 2018 season as Wentz’s backup before hitting free agency in 2019

If you take the above approach and Wentz isn’t ready before the midseason trade deadline, you’re probably thankful you kept Foles around. That could happen, but listen to the way the Eagles talk about Foles and their philosophy on having more than one reliable quarterback and you realize they’d probably be just fine with keeping Foles all season, regardless of what happens with Wentz.

“Our priority, as you’ve seen, is to make sure we have the very best possible other starting quarterback,” owner Jeffrey Lurie said last week, per ESPN.com’s Dan Graziano. “I won’t even call [Foles] a backup, because we had him evaluated as a very strong quarterback. He’s been 18-5 for us over the last 23 games when Nick has started a game and finished. His quarterback rating in the postseason—he’s a big-time, big-game player. That’s Nick.

“And we utilized about $12 million to have a second quarterback. And it may have seemed irrational, but I remember the phone call when it was [Roseman] and I talking, and we said, ‘We have an opportunity to do this. Do you have any reservations of using this $12 million this way versus other positions?’ And we both agreed this was absolutely the right thing to do. We never knew it would come to this, but we knew that Nick could win big games for us.”

With that in mind, I can envision the Eagles driving a hard bargain.

4. Foles is given a chance to take Wentz’s job

Even with Foles lighting it up in the playoffs and being crowned Super Bowl MVP, this scenario is the least likely of the four. Foles was every bit as good as Wentz the last few weeks, but the Eagles won’t likely allow this to become a quarterback controversy unless they’re unbeatable with Foles playing at an MVP level in Wentz’s stead next fall.

Even then, his leash would be short with Wentz healthy.

Philly essentially used back-to-back first-round picks on Wentz, who at the age of 25 might have been the league MVP if not for that December knee injury. The Eagles should be expected to give him the right of way throughout the 2018 season because he still has a higher ceiling than Foles and was dominant for a longer stretch in 2017.

That being said, crazier things have happened in the NFL.

For now, though, what’s next for Foles is a vacation.

Good news for the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1: they’ll face off against the Indianapolis Colts who will be without QB Andrew Luck:

It’s a story we’ve tracked for some time. In mid-August, Colts owner Jim Irsay hinted at the possibility. A few days later, we learned Colts C Ryan Kelly would be out early this season after undergoing foot surgery. And we confirmed today that in addition to Luck, CB Vontae Davis will also miss some time early on this season:

It sets up a very, very fortuitous situation for the Rams in Week 1. Perhaps in terms of narrative and the expectations game though, it’s a bit of a no-win situation.

The Rams now head into a Week 1 home game against a depleted Colts roster in which they’ll be expected to win. Instead of a win carrying the air of a franchise turning things around under new Head Coach Sean McVay providing QB Jared Goff with his first career NFL win, a victory on Sunday will only be painted as a gift from the injury timetables for the Colts. A loss? Calamitous. Inexcusable.

It’s worth holding some perspective of where we stand compared to a year ago. With the Rams having returned to Los Angeles, a new home fan base was eager to see a new product under Head Coach Jeff Fisher. A season-opening 0-28 loss to the hapless San Francisco 49ers underpinned what would ultimately be a failed season leading to Fisher’s firing.

McVay is under no job pressure in 2017. A loss won’t cost him his job. And a win won’t be the validation of his hiring Rams fans are hoping for. With the three players the Colts are without though, it may be a requirement if those hopes are to come to fruition in 2017.

Andrew Luck won’t be the only name missing when the Colts square off with the Rams on Sunday.

The team’s starting center, Ryan Kelly, has also been ruled out for the regular-season opener after undergoing August foot surgery.

First-year general manager Chris Ballard announced Monday that Kelly remains week-to-week, but said optimistically, per the team’s official site: “He’s close.”

In place of the second-year Kelly, rookie Deyshawn Bond will start for a Colts team set to “unleash” Scott Tolzien at quarterback ahead of the traded for Jacoby Brissett, with Ballard calling the ex-Patriots passer more of a “long-term” option for the club.

Kelly’s short-term timeline is somewhat surprising on the heels of reports that the second-year pivot could miss six-to-eight weeks as a logical candidate for IR Recall.

Getting Kelly — and Luck — back sooner than later would steer this Colts ship back into friendly waters after a truly dark end to the summer.

Other injuries we’re monitoring on this Labor Day while the rest of America sips cocktails and enjoys their respite from the ominous crush of industry:

1. More out of Indy, where the banged-up Colts will also be without cornerback Vontae Davis, who “is going to be out a few weeks” with the groin injury he suffered in the third preseason game, per Ballard.

2. New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham (ankle) remains sidelined at practice. Coach Ben McAdoo said no determination has been made as to whether he’ll play against the Dallas Cowboys this week.

Brandon Marshall (shoulder) said, “I’ll be out there,” when asked if he’ll play Sunday for Giants.

3. Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor remains in concussion protocol, but he returned to practice.

4. The Denver Broncos announced the pass rusher Shane Ray (wrist) will begin the season in injured reserve. Ray suffered a torn ligament in his wrist in the beginning of training camp.

5. The Los Angeles Chargers placed linebacker Denzel Perryman (ankle) on injured reserve. Perryman linebacker injured his ankle in Los Angeles’ preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

6. The Dallas Cowboys placed tight end Rico Gathers (concussion) on injured reserve/to return. He can start practicing with the team in Week 6 and return to the active roster in Week 8.

7. The Atlanta Falcons placed linebacker LaRoy Reynolds (pectoral muscle) on injured reserve.

8. After putting Steven Nelson on IR, the Chiefs got some good news for their depth, seeing corner Terrance Mitchell return to practice this week.

Nike Texans Andre Johnson Red Alternate With 10th Patch NFL Elite Jersey

wholesale china jerseysThe evolution of professional football into a passing oriented sport has made the wide receiver position more critical since the turn of the century. Since then not many athletes have played that position better than former UM star Andre Johnson.

Bucky Brooks, an NFL.com analyst and scout, ranked his top-10 wide receiver prospects since 2001. Coming in at No. 2 on that list was Johnson who was drafted third overall by the Houston Texans in 2003. He trailed only Georgia Tech’s Calvin Johnson.

“It’s hard to find big-bodied receivers with the combination of size, speed, athleticism and ball skills Johnson displayed as the No. 1 receiver at ‘The U’ during the early 2000s,” Brooks said.

While a member of the Hurricanes from 2000-02, Johnson won the 2001 national championship and now ranks
At 6-foot-2, 230 pounds, Johnson “dominated opponents on the perimeter as a vertical playmaker with explosive route-running ability and exceptional ball skills,” Brooks said.

Speaking of the running ability, Johnson was also a star on the Miami track team. In 2002, he captured Big East titles in the 60-meter dash in 6.81 seconds and 100-meter dash in 10.59 seconds. That translated to a 4.40 40-yard dash on the football field.

His success at Miami then morphed into a stellar NFL career. Johnson made the Pro Bowl sevens times and is one of only 12 players in NFL history to reach 14,000 career receiving yards.

“Johnson is arguably the gold standard at the position,” Brooks said.

Andre Johnson was a prolific member of the Texans, and now the team is honoring him in a big way.

The former receiver will be inducted as the first member of Houston’s Ring of Honor, the team announced Tuesday.

Johnson’s induction will be on Nov. 19, when the Texans take on the Cardinals at NRG Stadium.

The Texans, who entered the NFL as an expansion team in 2002, drafted Johnson third overall in the 2003 draft. He spent 12 years in Houston and was selected to the Pro Bowl seven times.

Johnson spent 2015 with the Colts and played eight games with the Titans in 2016 before calling it a career. Of Johnson’s 1,062 career receptions, which rank 11th all-time in NFL history, all but 50 were with the Texans.

Johnson signed a one-day contract with the Texans in April so he could retire with the team.

Former Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson is the brightest star in the young team’s history and will make the perfect foundation piece for their Ring of Honor.

On Nov. 19, 2017, the Houston Texans will begin the tradition of honoring the best players to grace the franchise with the inclusion of Andre Johnson in the Ring of Honor, per Pro Football Talk. No player has been placed in the Ring of Honor yet, allowing Johnson to start as a foundation piece for a team that he carried for over a decade.

In 12 seasons with the Texans, Johnson was often the lone offensive threat. He posted 1,012 receptions for 13,597 yards and 64 touchdowns during his tenure with Houston. He is 11th all-time in receiving yards and 11th all-time in receptions in his career. He also led the NFL in receptions twice (2006 and 2008), yards twice (2008 and 2009 when he topped 1500 both years), and receiving yards per game three times (2007, 2009 and 2010). His production led to seven Pro Bowls and two All-Pro selections. To say that Johnson left a mark as a player would be an understatement.

And Johnson did it all without a consistent quarterback threat. Matt Schaub‘s seven seasons as the starter were the high point.

That comes with the territory of being an expansion franchise, though. Johnson joined the Texans a season after they joined the NFL and was the face of the franchise for the next 12 seasons. From 2-14 to 12-4, Johnson was there through it all.

It isn’t every day that a team manages to find a player with the skills that Johnson possessed or the longevity to have such an outsized impact. The Texans struck gold in Johnson when they made him the third overall selection in 2003. The team immediately found a foundation on which to build.

Just as Johnson was the foundation for the Texans franchise in its early years, he will now be the foundation for the Ring of Honor in which the best of the best will be honored. He clawed his way to the NFL leader boards through grit and hard work and proved that anyone can reach the top no matter which team they play for. His franchise records (receptions, yards, and receiving touchdowns) and nearly insurmountable for the next decade — even with DeAndre Hopkins tearing it up.

Johnson signed a one-day contact in April to retire with the Texans, a team he helped create and mold. That move was an honor to his team and an honor to the fans. Now, he will be honored in return.
